In response to the COVID-19 public health emergency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are implementing six new ICD-10-CM and 21 new ICD-10-PCS codes, effective January 1, 2021.

When COVID-19 emerged in early 2020, new ICD-10-CM codes to identify this condition were not available. Subsequent ICD-10-CM codes and guidelines for reporting COVID-19 changed many times as the pandemic evolved throughout 2020.
